Guizhou Province

South West China‘s Guizhou Province, like Yunnan and Guangxi, is home to a large number of ethnic minorities who have their own languages, animistic religions and styles of traditional dress. The province’s scenery is beautiful, there is plenty of traditional old architecture out in the villages and ethnic markets where hill tribes come to trade are easy to access.

Guizhou is linked by train to all major cities in China and to Yunnan and Guangxi provinces. There is also a fascinating and beautiful overland route from Kaili in Guizhou to Chengyang in Guangxi. It takes 16 hours and a couple of bus changes at Zaoxing and Conjiang. The road is not great but the scenery is stunning, incredibly green, lush and hilly. Many people in the villages wear the traditional dress of their ethnic group every day, although nowhere is it as outlandish and psychedelic as in Yunnan, and the villages themselves contain a lot of traditional wooden architecture.
